DHAKA, May 8 (Reuters) – Bangladesh tightened security on Friday around diplomatic zones after an Islamist militant group threatened three missions including the U.S. embassy in the capital Dhaka, a senior police official said on Friday. The American embassy and the High Commissions of Canada and Australia informed police they had received identical threatening letters faxed to the missions by an unknown Islamist group, Jameaah Islamiyah al Qaeda, said A.K.M Shahidul Haque, the police chief of Dhaka.

“The group, which claimed to have close ties with outlawed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), asked the three missions to close down their activities within a week or face suicide bomb attack,” Haque told Reuters by telephone The missions could not be reached for comment. “We have already checked and found that these fax messages came from a Malaysian number and thus decided to inform the Malaysian government immediately through the ministry of foreign affairs,” Haque said. He said security had been increased around the diplomatic areas in the Bangladesh capital. JMB, one of several outlawed Islamist groups trying to turn mostly Muslim, democratic Bangladesh into a sharia-based Islamic state, was blamed for a series of deadly bombings in late 2005. The militants have been on the back foot since the top six JMB commanders were tried and executed in 2007, but intelligence officials have said they are regrouping and may strike again.
