Written  By: Mark “The Hard Hitter” Ritter The end result, a 2-1 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, was not the desired outcome for the Toronto Maple Leafs. That said, with everyone in Leafland watching, Phil Kessel performed admirably Tuesday night in his debut as a Leaf. When Kessel was signed as a free agent by Leafs GM Brian Burke, there were plenty of fans that were ready to start the Stanley Cup parade route and just as many that were ready to show up on Burke’s doorstep to kick his door in. Tuesday night, Kessel’s on-ice performance went a long way in proving his worth. He led the Leafs with 10 shots on goal (a career high), led the team with 23:50 of ice time, survived a massive hit from T-Bay’s Mathias Ohlund, played a solid two-way game, and seemingly made his linemates better. Sure, the end result was a 2-1 loss, but it was the intangibles that Leaf fans should be focusing on.

Kessel’s speed was very evident and his compete level was off the charts david gray music . Clearly, Kessel came to play and has served notice to the other 29 NHL teams that Toronto will no longer be a “gimmie” on their schedule. Many writers have been questioning whether or not Kessel would be able to handle the pressure of playing in Toronto this years love . Let us not forget that this is a 23-year-old kid who went through testicular cancer and a serious shoulder injury already in his short NHL career, playing in Toronto? No worries, pardon the pun, but this kid plays “balls out!” Besides Kessel, the Leafs can take a ton of positives out of their game against Tampa lyrics white ladder . They were able to muster up 41 shots on T-Bay’s Antero Niittymaki (who playedexcellent), Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson made 30 saves and was exceptional between the pipes, and the Leafs were able to keep the NHL’s hottest player (Steven Stamkos) off the scoresheet. Did they play a perfect game? No, but given the Leafs improved play of late, you have to believe the Leafs are not as bad as they appear to be on paper and may very well be able to turn this season around. Underrated defenseman Ian White scored a power play goal and registered four shots on net, Lee Stempniak had six shots and defenseman Mike Komisarek stayed out of the penalty box- which is something short of a miracle. Despite the loss, it was a great night for the Leafs the one i love . Gustavsson looks better with every game played and, with Kessel in the lineup, the Leafs are sure to play with a lot more confidence and passion, something that was missing early on in the season. Up next for the Leafs? The Leafs visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, followed by an Original Six matchup against the struggling Detroit Red Wings at Home on Saturday night, both of which are winnable games. The Phil Kessel era has arrived and, so far, “It’s all good…” Until next time, Peace!. CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Reuters) – The “serious” recession in the United States is likely to linger at least through mid-year before the policy responses already in place or in the planning stage start to take hold, Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Gary Stern said on Wednesday. EconomyBut even with a major fiscal stimulus package on tap to boost aggregate demand, the early stages of recovery are likely to be subdued, with “healthy growth” unlikely before the middle of 2010, Stern said in a speech to local business leaders in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.”In view of the state of the credit markets and of the housing sector, it seems a fair bet that it will take time for momentum to build,” he said.”The economy is in the midst of a serious recession that seems likely to persist for at least another two quarters.

Most sectors of the economy are contracting, and it is difficult, as it always is, to identify with confidence the engine, or engines, of expansion that will propel the recovery in activity,” Stern said. For its part, the Fed has shown its willingness to use a variety of traditional and nontraditional tools to support the economy, Stern said.Stern acknowledged, but downplayed, the threats of both deflation from the sharp decline in U.S . economic growth and an outbreak of inflation fueled by a massive expansion to the Fed’s balance sheet.December consumer inflation figures due on Friday are likely to show a year-on-year decline in consumer prices, sparking fears that deflation, or a damaging downward spiral in prices, could be setting up as economic growth stalls.”Neither concern (deflation or inflation) can be dismissed out of hand, but if economic growth resumes in the United States as I expect, the threat of deflation should diminish commensurately,” he said.Stern said there was “ample time to withdraw excess liquidity as appropriate,” and the Fed “remains firmly committed to long-run price stability.”Strained credit markets remain an impediment to an economic turnaround, but have shown signs of improvement compared with levels of a few months ago, he said.”On the positive side, term funding is more readily available than at the height of the crisis and risk premia have diminished through much of the financial sector,” Stern said. But structural problems uncovered by the 2007 credit market collapse could be pervasive, he added.”The so-called ’shadow banking system’ grew rapidly relative to the traditional banking sector over the past two decades or so babylon gray . And now the demands on the banks from these nonbank financial institutions are that much greater, making it difficult for banks to respond adequately to all customers,” Stern said.(Reporting by Ros Krasny; editing by Gary Crosse) Economy david lovin . American Heart Association rapid access journal report:Study highlights:– Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) may reduce the risk of deathby 30 percent in patients with reduced heart function.– This survival benefit applied to patients 75 years and older in thisprimary prevention study.– Previous studies have focused on younger, healthier patients.DALLAS, Jan . 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Implantable cardioverterdefibrillators (ICDs) can improve survival in patients with heart damage —even those in their 70s — according to research reported in Circulation:Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.Implanted ICDs reduced the risk of dying by 30 percent in patients youngerthan 65 years old, 65 to 74, and 75 and older, said Paul Chan, M.D., M.Sc.,lead author of the study and assistant professor at the Mid-America HeartInstitute and the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Patients who have damaged heart muscle that results in diminished pumpingaction — called left ventricular systolic dysfunction — are candidates forICDs to prevent death from life-threatening arrhythmias. The tiny devices areimplanted under the skin and connected to the heart muscle by electrodes.AnICD automatically shocks the heart back into normal rhythm when the ICDdetects life-threatening rhythms.Previous studies of ICDs have been conducted in patients who are primarilyyounger than 75, and who have few complications such as diabetes, chronicobstructive lung disease or a history of stroke. This primary prevention study recruited 986 consecutive patients who haddiminished left ventricular function — meaning the pumping chamber of theheart was functioning at no more than 35 percent of capacity.Patients weretreated from March 2001 though June 2005 and followed through March 2007.Researchers compared outcomes of 500 patients who received ICDs to those whodidn’t receive the devices. The median age of patients was 67.This wasabout seven years older than participants in an earlier study thatinvestigated the use of ICDs in patients with heart failure (the SCD-HeFTtrial) and about three years older than participants in a study that reportedon the use of ICDs in patients who had heart attacks (the MADIT-2 trial).
